“It’s-a just along this path…” The plumber draped in green says.
The map was gripped tightly in Luigi’s gloved hand, his flashlight in the other.
Finally, he came to a large gate, bright blue flames flickering on either side.
Luigi pushes open the gate and walks up the stone path, glancing at the graves.
He walks up to the wooden doors and shakily reaches for the knob.
Lightning strikes a few miles away, knocking him down.
He wipes the sweat off of his brow and opens the door.
Luigi steps inside and waves the flashlight around, slightly illuminating the room he was in.
“M-Mario?” Luigi shakily yells. “Are you here?”
“Who’s Mario?” A voice asks from behind him.
Luigi screams and falls down, scrambling for his flashlight and shining it on the person.
The yellow fox behind him shielded his eyes with his hand, clearly bothered by the light.
Luigi puts away the flashlight and looks at the fox. “W-who are you and what are you doing here?”
“I’m Miles Prower. But you can just call me Tails. I won this mansion in a contest, but I knew something was off, so I came to check it out with my buddy Sonic.”
“I’m Luigi.” Luigi responds before his eyes go wide. “Wait, I won this mansion in a contest! And I came to get settled with my brother Mario!”
“Hmmm, something is definitely off here…” Tails mumbles to himself, looking down.
“G-g-g-g-g-g-g…” Luigi begins stuttering, Tails looks back up to him.
“GHOST!” He stammers, pointing to an orange mist surrounding a floating key.
The mist seems to notice them and drops the key, heading into a door.
The key gets caught on the chandelier. “Great… How are we gonna get up there to it now?” Luigi asks.
“I know how to.” Tails says. “What? How?” Luigi exclaims.
Tails heads up the stairs and his tails start spinning like a motor.
He jumps off of the railing and hovers over to the chandelier, snatching the key.
He lands and hands the key to Luigi. “Heh… I guess that’s why people call you Tails…” Luigi laughs, scratching the back of his head.
“Yeah,” Tails says.”Now come on, I bet this key unlocks the door that… thing went through.”
“C-can’t we just sell this key and leave?” Luigi asks. “It looks like it’s gold…”
Tails narrows his eyes. “No, we have to find Sonic and your brother. Besides, it’s probably plated.”
Luigi sighs. “I guess you’re right…” They walk upstairs, Luigi hesitating a bit.
Luigi shakily puts the key into the door and opens it.
Tails walks in. “Hm. Seems pretty normal. But those paintings are giving me the creeps…”
“Yeah, they’re a bit… eerie.” Luigi says, looking at one of a snooty-looking woman.
Suddenly, an orange creature appears in front of Luigi scaring him.
Just as it’s about to punch Luigi, a flashlight beam hits it, making some sort of heart appear in it’s chest area.
A red ray appears on the creature, and it begins being pulled back.
The red ray leads to an old man holding a vacuum cleaner of some sorts. “Get back, ghost!” He yells.
The ghost begins trying to flee, floating across the room, dragging the vacuum and the old man, who is hanging on for dear life.
Eventually, the ghost breaks free from the ray and laughs as it disappears.
“Ouch..” The old man weakly gets up. “I sure take a lot of knocks in this line of work…”
“I’m getting to old for this ghost catching tomfoolery… Anyways, nice to meet you two. I’m Professor E. Gadd!”
“This house… I swear it seems to have more ghosts every day… What are two young fellers like you doing around here anyway?”
“G-ghosts?” Luigi asks nervously. “Well, we’re-“ Tails begins to say before being cut off by three of the orange ghosts appearing.
“Uh-oh, this looks ugly…” E. Gadd mutters. “Quick, youngsters, look lively, follow me posthaste!”
Luigi, E. Gadd, and Tails all burst out of the door, running for the entrance.
After they get out, E. Gadd leads them to the shack Luigi glanced at earlier.
Inside is a ladder, which they all climb down.
Down the ladder was a giant mess of machines and some doors
“So what are your names again?” E. Gadd says.
“I’m Tails and this is Luigi.” Tails says.
“Luigi and Nails…”
“Tails.” Tails corrected.
“I think our paths were destined to cross.” E. Gadd says, completely ignoring Tails. “Well met, you two.”
“Um… What is this place exactly?” Luigi asks, a confused look on his face.
“Why, these cozy quarters are where I do my ghost-studying! Professor E. Gadd’s Ghost research laboratory! The Lab, for those of a shortening mind. Now how did you find this mansion?”
“We both won it in a contest. But we didn’t even enter it!” Tails exclaims.
“So you believe the mansion actually exists then… Strange. I’ve been living here since I was a lad of twenty or so, and I’ll tell you: that mansion appeared just a few days ago! The spirits have fooled you both!”
“I don’t know if it’s a dream, illusion, or what, but I surely wouldn’t be too happy winning a haunted house! Now that a get I get a look at you two, I just recalled… A guy with a red hat like yours walked up to the mansion, never stopping to chat! I also saw a blue blur speeding towards the mansion and stopping to open the door, it being some kind of blue hedgehog! Were they dreams too?”
“That ‘red guy’ was my brother, Mario!” Luigi says.
“And that blue hedgehog was my best friend, Sonic!” Tails exclaims.
“Oh no! That’s horrible! They wouldn’t stand a chance against those ghosts without my help! Here’s the deal. I’ll teach you how to fight ghosts so you can rescue your friend and brother.”
He hands Luigi a green version of the vacuum they saw earlier, and Tails, a yellow one.
“Go in the training room over there.” He says, pointing to a steel door.
They head inside after putting the vacuum’s straps on their backs.
Something in Luigi’s pocket starts buzzing. “Hmm?”
He picks up a small Gameboy Color entitled ‘Gameboy Horror’.
On the screen was a message. “CALL FROM E. GADD. ANSWER?”
Luigi pressed the ‘A’ button.
E. Gadd popped up on the screen.
“That’s the vacuum cleaner I engineered to catch ghosts. I call it, this is genius… The Poltergust 3000!” He snorts before continuing.
“It can suck up all kinds of things. Let ‘er rip! All you have to do is stun the ghosts with your flashlight to make their heart show before flipping the ‘ON’ switch to ‘PULL’!”
“No matter how strong your friend and brother are, they don’t stand a change against those ghosts! This is the only way to foil them! Or something to that affect… How about we begin training?”
“Remember, pull the opposite direction the ghost is going to drain its health!”
The lights dim low and two ghosts pop up.
Tails easily stuns one and begins vacuuming it, although it drags him around the room.
Luigi shakily turns on his flashlight and turns the cleaner on. It drags him around the room and he barely captures it.
“Remember, as soon as you see the ghost’s heart, that’s your chance!”
Two more appear and they easily defeat them.
This time, four pop up. “Hey, look at me!” Luigi says, in the process of vacuuming two. Tails captures the other ones.
“Remember, stun them when they’re close! That’ll do. Let’s see how many you got…”
Confetti flies around the room.
“Eight ghosts, four each! Nice job, you two. I think you’re ready to go in.”
They walk out of the room and climb up the ladder.
They reach the entrance and stare at the doorknob.
“Ready?” Tails asks. “Ready.” Luigi says. They push open the door, about to embark on a longer journey than they think...
